What this two devices do is take a video source and send it over the local network or Internet. Normally we use this device together with a TV tuner so that we can whatch TV when we are away from home or living abroad.
Both machines have players for PC, MAC, iOS (iphone, iPod, iPad) and Android devices. The PC and MAC players are pretty similar and free on both cases. The mobile player for Vulkano Flow costs 1,100yen and the Slingbox mobile player costs 2600yen.
When you are whatching the TV with the mobile player it is always better if you have WIFI access. With 3G access the quality may be low and TV streaming may be interrupted (even more if you are on the move or very congested area). The 3G access quality does not depend on the Vulkano or Slingbox, but more on your mobile phone network. Many mobile phone operators have congested networks because of the rise of the smartphones and data consumption and they can not provide reliable high quality video streaming.
For the PC player you will need a PC with at least a dual core processor, it may work on slower PCs, but TV decoding is quite CPU intensive and the video may suddenly stop and jump forward or the audio may stop after a few minutes.
Both Slingbox and Vulkano player use ethernet connections to connect to your router and they both have a similar set up wizard. If upnp is not enabled on your router or the router is password protected you will need to open the ports manually on both cases.
I always recommend using the cabled ethernet port whenever possible, but the Vulkano has got a very interesting WIFI connection. This means that if your video source is far from your router, you can avoid long cables going through your home and use WIFI instead. Another solution in this case that be used for both slingbox and vulkano is to use a PLC adapter that send the data using the power cables of your home.
A very important part is if your slingbox or vulkano will be able to control your tuner. As Vulkano is imported to Japan by IO DATA, it is compatible with most of their tuners, slingbox on the other hand does not have controllers for most digital tuners, but it has some controllers for cable TV tuners.
If your tuner is not available the controller can be programmed, programming is much easier using Vulkano than Slingbox where very advanced knowledge and tools are needed to program a remote controller. On the other hand the Vulkano controller learning system does not always work.
Vulkano only allows to store one remote control as well as Slingbox Solo. But with Slingbox HD you can control up to three different devices, this is useful, for example, if you want to control a tuner and a DVD player separately.
Some people say that Slingbox image quality is higher but I have not seen much image quality difference between the two systems. What realy matters for image quality is your upload internet speed at the place where the transmitter is set. You can watch TV with 256kbps upload speed but the quality will be very bad. I recommed and least 1MB of upload speed, you can get the best image quality if you have 2MB or higher upload speed. Of course you need at least the same download speed at the place where you are watching the TV.
Slingbox costs about double of the Vulkano Flow, and that has been a great help to the success of the Vulkano Flow together with it's wifi support. However the Slingbox is said to be better better made and have better quality.
